Dear State of Colorado,
I want to specifically address the shenanigans taking place in our state which began in (no surprise) Boulder County, and has since spread like a Colorado forest fire to other counties (including, but not limited to, Denver and Pueblo). Regardless of whether the citizens of this fine state passed an Amendment clarifying what marriage is and is not (and we did), and no matter how many same-sex mirage licenses you hand out (which you have), you are not, and will never be, the final arbiter of what constitutes a marriage.Â
Ms. Hillary Hall (Boulder’s Clerk and Recorder), you recently stated in an interview that you are on the “right side of history†on this matter, and thus, you are convinced that all the court hearings will end up ruling the “inevitable.†Ma’am, with all due respect, you are not the one, nor is a legislative body, nor is a church, a family, nor any individual given the privilege of defining and determining what side of history we are on. To be frank, what standard do you give for whether you are on the “right side of history†or not? Who decides what the “right side†is and what the “wrong side†is? It is not, and never will be, you or me.
Thus, citizens and legislatures of Colorado, may I submit that public opinion does not determine “rightness†or “wrongness.†If there is right and if there is wrong (and there is), then there must be a Dispenser of this morality. Furthermore, marriage has civil implications, however, the civil realm must acknowledge that it has jurisdictional limits. Passing out marriage licenses, like joints of marijuana on April 20th on CU’s campus, does not mean that the recipients of these licenses are married. What if 39 people showed up on the front steps of the Boulder County courthouse, demanding a marriage license, because they all want to get married to each other (which I think some group should do, just to make a point), will you hand out a license to these polyandroids? What if Farmer Bill wants to marry the person he loves, but the person he loves is his pony (hey, animals are people too); will you restrict his “right†to a family? What will you do when you refuse to give a mirage license to Farmer Bill, and he declares that now YOU are on the wrong side of history?
John Suthers (Colorado’s Attorney General), while I thank you for your fight on this topic, remember that this is not an issue of simple lawlessness. This is an issue which is disregarding the very foundation of morality upon which law itself is derived. The process only works so long as we are clear on where authority flows, and while our American civics class taught us it ought to be derived by the consent of the governed, there is a greater Authority behind even our Democracy. And to this Authority, we shall all be made to give an account. Kratos is the Greek word for rule, reign, or sphere of influence. May I remind you that Jesus Christ upholds the universe by the word of His power; and in Him all things consist. Apart from Him was not anything made that is made! The extent of Christ’s Kratos is eternal, and must be acknowledge and submitted to by us as men! Remember, Boulder (and Denver and Pueblo) County’s lawlessness is simply a battle in the war over where our standard of morality is to come from.
Finally, a word to the citizens of this fine state; may we remember that catchphrases about tolerance and love are in and of themselves value statements, and therefore are not immune to discussion, debate and challenge. We must be allowed to have a free and civil discourse, without painting the opposing viewpoint as homophobic, intolerant, or from the era of the neanderthal. If we tolerate our lower level officials defying laws, while we stand by saying, “Yeah, we should be on the right side of history, we should let people love whoever they want, we should be more tolerant,†we will find ourselves in a rather uncomfortable place when the Righteous Judge and Ordainer of History declares that we were, in fact, on the wrong side of His Story!
So, if our state wants to continue to hand our same-sex mirage licenses, I want to request that they also hand out some boardstretchers, blinker fluid, Sasquatches, and while they’re at it they should amend the constitution to declare that the sky is green and the grass blue, and that up is down. Hey, after all, gravity is on the wrong side of history.
Sincerely,
Ben Zornes
