The real question before the church of the 21st century is this: Will we acknowledge Jesus Christ as head of His church and His Word as her binding charter? The flurry of controversial news stories (albeit mostly about reality TV stars), has exposed how successful the Enemy has been in convincing many Christians that Christ is merely a love and hugs sort of guy; rather than as scripture teaches: King, Lord, Sovereign, Judge, High Priest, Shepherd, etc.
We have surrendered the authority and headship of Christ and His Word, and we are content to let the feelings of someone “out there†––who might possibly be offended that the Bible calls their behavior sinful, abominable, and wicked––dictate the behavior of the Church. Ironically, when you scroll through the comments you continually see people using the Bible as an authority as to why Christians shouldn’t use the Bible as an authority. We are told the Bible teaches us to love people and not judge; this is using the Bible as an authority; but, how dare we use the Bible the same way they just did!
Sinful man will use any method he can to justify his guilty conscience. Including cherry picking Bible verses to shout down Christians using the Bible to rebuke the present sin in question. The Lord Jesus is the Head of the Church, and we ought not to expect any reformation in our society as long as the Church submits to the authority of the hypothetical “hurt-feelingsâ€. To put it another way, last I checked, Jesus Christ was Lord, not Bruce Jenner’s sensitivities. When Jesus quoted Isaiah 61:1, “The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound,†he didn’t consult the feelings of the brokenhearted, captives, or the prisoners.
Finally, the Church must submit to Christ’s Word and what He calls sin, we must call sin. Now, if we faithfully submit to Him and His word, we will quickly see that there are plenty of liberal sins, conservative sins, Catholic sins, Pentecostal sins, Evangelical sins, transgender sins…and if we are in earnest about obeying the Lord Jesus, we ought to be the first to repent and then call others to repent and forsake their sin.
