This is my metrical version of the Magnificat (Mary’s response to the announcement that she would bear the Christ). I composed the melody and my friend Mark Reagan added the harmonization. Enjoy.
Verse 1
Behold the servant of the Lord,
let it be unto me
according to Your word.
My soul does magnify the Lord
My spirit has rejoiced
in God my strong Savior.
Verse 2
Great God who dwells in Heav’n on high
regards the low estate
of his elect handmaid.
Like Father Abraham of old,
the generations hence
shall call me blessed indeed.
Verse 3
The Mighty One has done to me
great things, great things indeed;
and holy is His name.
To a thousand generations,
His mercy rests on them
that fear & rev’rence Him.
Verse 4
The Lord with strength has bared His arm;
He’s winnowed all the proud
in their foolhardy schemes.
He’s pulled the mighty from their seats,
but them of low degree
are raised unto His throne.
Verse 5
The hungry with good things are filled
by God’s incarnate hand,
by God’s righteous right hand.
Yet to those who’ve waxed rich and proud
He’s sent them all away
with empty hands and hearts.
Verse 6
His servant Isr’el He has helped;
He can’t & won’t forget
His mercy’s covenant.
As He swore unto the patriarchs,
to faithful Abraham,
and to his seed always.
