Leonardo DiCaprio recently made headlines that churned my stomach as I read them: “Leonardo DiCaprio leaves Miami nightclub with 20 models†and “Leonardo DiCaprio Breaks Up With Girlfriend, Leaves Club With 20 Modelsâ€. The media was deeply impressed, and showed their adoration of a man who could dump a lovely young woman (half his age) and then go to a club and show that he’s such a chick-magnet, such a stud, that he’ll take twenty babes, thank you very much.
And yet we (and by “we” I mean conservative, evangelical Christians) are accused of subjugating women, mistreating them, and keeping them down all because we fight hammer and tongs against the murder of innocent unborn women. This is a great violation of the script. If you want to play with the cool kids you’ve gotta follow their rules. It is fine to be for women’s rights, equality, and such things, but this only applies to human women, not those fetal women that aren’t quite yet fully human (despite having all the DNA and genetic material of a human).
In order to play with the cool kids, you need to speak to the UN about saving our planet, and then it is just fine if you want to have a harem of nubile and naive young ladies and use them for your own pleasure. The double standard here is dizzying. DiCaprio and his ilk want us to show restraint, control and honor when it comes to environmental issues, but they themselves display blatantly selfish consumerism when it comes to how they treat women. To top it off, rather than getting taken to the woodshed, the media claps him on the back and says, “atta boy!â€
Christianity, on the other hand, offers dignity to women. All of them. It is a sad reality that over the last couple decades an estimated 200 million women have been murder through abortion simply because they were women. Nevertheless, Christians and conservatives are accused of being the ones waging a war on women. We live in a world where in order to stand for women’s rights you have to be ok with willful murder of women because they are women.
Furthermore, in the midst of the cacophony of feminist and pro-choice mantras, a trumpet blast of reason must ring out loud and clear and it is this: biblical, monogamous, one man & one women life-long marriages is the most empowering way for a women to “take control of her reproductive rights†(see 1 Cor. 7 for Paul’s discussion of this). When our society lauds a 40 year old man assembling a harem of 20 young women, it is no wonder that this society also feels the need to reach for a way for those women to protect themselves against the unmitigated lust of a man. The best way for society to protect young women that might potentially find themselves in this sort of quandary is not a pill, legalized abortion, or other forms of contraception. The solution is known as a dad; and preferably a dad with a shot-gun, who raises his daughter to never lower herself to become merely an accessory to a man who probably won’t even remember her name The best way for a women to protect her reproductive system––and her whole body––is known as a marriage vow; where a man and women promise to love, honor and cherish the other, ’til death do they part. That’s actually worked rather well for quite a while, regardless of what the cool kids say!
